SeoulGlow #10 - Dinner With Soyeon (Part 3) April 3, 2008

Posted by Michael Hurt in : Episodes , 5comments

Success! Previously, in Episodes I and II, we met Soyeon Yi, one of two candidates being sent to Russia, and who has been chosen as the first Korean to go into space in April 2008.

아싸! 저번 에피소드에서는 이소연씨와 만났습니다. 이소연씨는 2008년 4월 대한민국 최초로 러시아에서 우주로 가게 될 두 우주인 후보중 한분입니다.

SeoulGlow taped 3 interviews with her, of which this is the third. At this point, she has become one of the final two candidates, but the final decision had not been made…

이소연씨와 한 세번의 인터뷰 중 세번째 에피소드 입니다. 현재 최종 두 호보에는 들었지만, 아직 최종 결정은 나오지 않았습니다.

Well, I just attended and participated in the YouTube Korea press conference – so you’ve probably read in the news that YouTube Korea has officially opened its doors in Korea and the site gone live.

YT Korea asked me (SeoulGlow) to make a welcome video, which you see above. I had little time to do it, but went with something that felt right, like a real greeting. Perhaps not too creative, but given my time schedule, surprising that I even pulled this much off.

With the attention that getting featured on YT Korea’s front page will bring, it’s time to get back to getting SeoulGlow back online. Next up is the final part of the Korean astronaut series, as well as new episodes. I’ve already gotten as many views on the Superkids episode TODAY as watched it since months ago. So we’re going to have more viewers.
Anyone out there who’d like to help with subtitling, editing, or producing episodes, please get in touch at my email address at the top right of the page.
Let’s get SeoulGlow going again! To do that, I need help. Care to join the team? Contact me!

SeoulGlow #8 - Goodbye, Teacher August 25, 2007

Join special guest Melissa Yasinow, a fellow Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) who completed her year in Naju and the note that she enlisted my technical help to make. The content and love is all hers, since I’m just working the camera this time.

While Melissa wanted to make a simple note to her school, I thought it might be a good opportunity to pose the question of why we don’t see any foreigners like her in the Korean media, which seems to be bending as far as possible backwards to show the worst possible stereotypes of foreigners in the media.
That said, enjoy one American woman’s tribute to a positive experience that has changed her life, and I’m sure she has touched the lives of her students, teachers, and friends as well.

SeoulGlow #7 - Clash of the Superkids May 15, 2007

And in celebration of Teachers’ Day in Korea, we have a video made by “Notorious Joe” McPherson and his super group of special kids, whom he teaches in his school full of children with special powers.
The X-Men, you say?
Nay!
It’s the “Clash of the Superkids” and the fight is ON, baby!

I think the budget and special effects in this podcast looks about like what they spent in X-Men 3. Ouch for them, good for Joe and the kids!
Now, that’s entertainment!

SeoulGlow #6 - Susan Eats Jokbal! March 30, 2007

Posted by Michael Hurt in : Seoul Food, Episodes , 10comments

Finally! In this 6th episode of SeoulGlow, Susan treats us to her second installment of “Seoul Food,” in which she eats jokbal naked. Ahem. Er, umm, perhaps it’s better to say she eats naked jokbal, that being without the sauce and, erm…condiments.
Umm, I think I’m digging a hole here. Help? Anyway, we warn our viewers, however — if you watch this video without reasonable access to large amounts of freshly cut pork, you may end up hurting someone close to you. Do NOT watch on an empty stomach. Unless you want to start knawing on the flesh of other sentient beings, of course, since pigs and humans are such genetically close cousins.

I apologize for the spotty releases of our SeoulGlow video podcasts, but I am beholden to being “lost in translation” when it comes to the subtitling stage, especially when going from English to Korean. We need interns! And we’re paying!
If you have any Korean friends who are looking for something, just send them over to this link (I put together a Korean description as well) and let them get in touch.
Also, for the Korean speakers out there who might want to practice their English and listening comprehension, we’ve provided the transcript (thanks, Dylan!) for their use, available after the jump.
And don’t forget to let your Seooooooooul glow!

SeoulGlow #5 – The Art of Daechuri March 14, 2007

Posted by Michael Hurt in : Submission, Controversy/논쟁, Episodes , 5comments

The farming village of Daechuri is being evicted by the Korean government for the expansion of a nearby U.S. military base. For several years, the villagers and activists have resisted the forceful eviction, but the residents of Daechuri recently signed an agreement with the government to leave their village by the end of March.

I visited Daechuri on Saturday March 3. Behind the perimeter of fences guarded by police, many of the homes had been demolished and the unharvested fields were trenched off with barbed wire. But there was art everywhere amidst the ruin – murals, sculptures, junk art, and a gallery filled with paintings. The villagers held their nightly candlelight vigil in a hall surrounded by painted portraits, and in the evening they sang songs around a bonfire.

This video is a tribute to the art of Daechuri.

SeoulGlow #4.2 – Dinner With Soyeon (Part 2 of 3) February 26, 2007

Posted by Michael Hurt in : Episodes , 6comments

The next installment of the “Spacegirl” series – as some Korean folks around me like to affectionately call it – is served. To those of you who asked, I did my best to consolidate the subtitles into longer sentences, instead of breaking them into smaller chunks that keep you reading more than watching.

Soyeon changes a little bit from video to video, especially since she’s getting much more experience and perspective on the prospect of going into space, and as that prospect becomes more concrete and real. And she mentions the inevitable factor of politics affecting her position and what this means for her. The real juicy stuff we had to reserve for heated conversation over beer, lest she get in trouble and actually not end up going anywhere.

But, wow – I think that girl is cut out to go to space, which is why I think I’d be rooting for her even if she weren’t already my friend. Soyeon is both mentally and physically fit for it, she has a vision of where she wants Korean space technology to be, and has been able to keep her feet on the ground even as her mind dreams of space.

How does this look on Metacafe? They offer a lot more control and flexibility than either YouTube or Revver.

SeoulGlow #4 - Dinner With Soyeon (1 of 3) February 21, 2007

I’ve technically not broken our Tuesday deadline for uploading, as the iTunes podcast version of the podcast went up some minutes ago, well before midnight. And the video’s on YouTube now, but these days, the old ‘Tube has been taking hours to actually process and stream the video, even after it has gone live.

I apologize for the delay, but this was one tough podcast to put together, because it’s a good story, a good interview, and lots of subtitling. Carpal tunnel syndrome is in the stars for me.

This podcast has actually been in the works for the longest of any of them, from all the way back in the summer, when my friend Soyeon was still getting through the major weeding-out rounds of the Korean Astronaut program. I had a feeling she was a strong contender, so I just decided to start filming her, since she was already a winner in my book.

So I did two interviews before the big Christmas Day announcement that she had made it, and one a few weeks ago, as she prepares to leave the country for Russia, where she will train for a year before just maybe being the first Korean to go into space, and one of only a fraction of human beings on the planet who ever has.

I tried to have fun with the editing, fun with the space theme, and slog through the subtitling. I personally liked the direct, first-person style interview, and the goal was to be casual, let Soyeon’s charm and personality shine through, and to make the viewer feel like they are having the conversation with her. I hope I was able to accomplish those things.

In other news, I’ve decided that I need a student intern. More on that later, but if you know any smart and motivated students going to Yeondae, Idae, Hongdae, or Seogang (all in my area, and the latter in walking distance of my house), I’ve got a desire to teach a motivated person video editing on a fast Mac, subtitling, and many other aspects of video production. Being pretty good at English is a must, not so much for communication with me, but because of subtitling. I still plan on doing the English=>Korean translations myself, but need a lot of other help.

We’ve got other shows coming down the pipe, so the greater our production capacity, the better. I’ll be putting up a blurb in an upcoming episode.

And be sure to watch the next two parts to this video – I plan to get these out maybe Thursday or Friday nights, but don’t be surprised if these are about 1/2 a day late. It’s a one-man production show here.

Enjoy the series, and don’t forget to let your Seoooooooul glow!

SeoulGlow #3 - College Entrance Exam (v.2) February 14, 2007

I’ve reposted the episode with a minor alterations, namely being a mistranslation and a couple typos, along with a quick explanation of what the police were doing ferrying kids to this test, which I realize is clear to me, since I’ve been living here so long, but not so clear to even people who already have some familiarity with Korean culture.

Please update your links and whatnot appropriately. Also, if you like an episode, click on the YouTube icon to go to your site, copy the embed code, and stick the video in your own blog? It’s easy.

작년 11월달에 수능시험날의 아침에 어떤 학교에 가서 애들한테 수능과 한국의 교육제도에 대해서 물어봤어요. 그들의 여러가지 대답이 재밌었어요.

I went last November to wait in the cold outside a school where kids were taking the big test, and asked them a few questions about it. I got a variety of interesting responses.
